Version 2.0.6 · Released October 2, 2026
Odysseus now installs as a server agent: discoveries run in a background service, even when nobody is logged on, and the window becomes a viewer for that service.
New
- Background service: when Odysseus is installed for all users, a scheduled task named Hector Odysseus runs the agent as SYSTEM. It starts with Windows and restarts automatically if it stops. The notification area icon appears for every user who logs on and shows the service’s status, devices and IP ranges.
- Choice of ports scanned: File > Settings > Ports scanned lists the TCP ports checked on each device. You can turn built-in ports off and add up to 64 of your own. A note under each port explains what it is used for, and you are warned before turning off a port that helps identify devices.
- Installation folder: the installer (MSI) now has a page for choosing the installation folder. By default it installs in
C:\Program Files\Hector.Odysseus, and updates keep the folder already in use.
Improved
- VoIP phones: port 5060 (SIP) is now scanned, so IP phones are recognized as VoIP phones.
- Updates: the background service checks for updates every 4 hours and never installs one during a discovery. Open Odysseus windows close and reopen on their own after an update.
- Security: only an administrator of the computer can pair or reset the agent or change its settings. The agent’s data folder and installation folder are restricted to administrators and SYSTEM.
- Startup: if you turned off Odysseus at startup in Task Manager, the agent no longer turns it back on.
Note for administrators
- Install with the MSI, as an administrator. For a silent install, run
msiexec /i Hector.Odysseus-stable.msi /qn. To use another folder, addVELOPACK_INSTALLDIR="D:\Odysseus". - Data moves to
%ProgramData%\Hector\Odysseus. The existing pairing, settings and SNMP credentials are copied automatically, so the agent doesn’t need to be paired again. - Agents installed for one user update themselves. Agents installed with the 2.0.5 MSI can’t: install the 2.0.6 MSI over them.
- If you move from an installation for one user to the MSI, uninstall the old copy first so it doesn’t keep scanning on its own.
